König Snow Chain Fitment Tips

To ensure no headaches or issues with your König Snow Chains, please follow the instructions outlined below – before you head up the hill. If performed in the driveway at home with enough time in advance, we have an opportunity to arrange an alternative if the test fit is unsuccessful.

Failure to do so could result in damage to the vehicle or much worse.

Firstly, confirm that there is enough clearance for the chains on whichever axle the chains are destined for on the vehicle. Suspension components, wheel arch body work and linings - with geometry changes like full left to right lock and suspension/wheel travel over bumps.

Ideally test fit at home in clean/dry conditions, and avoid driving on them in case you need to exchange.

A 9mm chain requires a gap of 15mm between the inner edge of the tyre and any obstructions to allow for movement of the chain.

A 12mm chain needs a gap of 18mm between the inner edge of the tyre and any obstructions to allow for movement of the chain.

A 16mm chain needs a gap of at least 21mm between the inner edge of the tyre and any obstructions to allow for movement of the chain.

Clearance Check Procedure:

Some vehicles have very little room between the wheel and suspension of the vehicle or other obstructions, meaning the chains could come into contact with the bodywork, braking systems, steering or suspension components with serious consequences.

You can check by placing your hand into the wheel arch, onto the tyre and feeling around the tyre for obstructions which come close to it, especially the far/inside wall of the tyre.

Move your hand from 9 O'clock to 3 O'clock along the back/inside of the wheel to check the distance between the wheel and any obstructions. Keep in mind that a chain sits over the rubber of the tyre, thus any obstruction which comes close on any side of the tyre could be an issue.

If you are fitting to the front wheels, consider how close the wheel arch is to the tyre when turning. Usually, the tightest point is at 3 and 9 O’clock on the back of the wheel when the steering is at full lock. (Check by putting the steering at full lock and placing your hand into the squeeze point to assess the proximity of arch to tyre - do the same for both directions)

ALWAYS CHECK CLEARANCE!

TYRE SIZES FROM DIFFERENT MANUFACTURES CAN VARY. CHAINS MUST ALWAYS BE TEST FITTED PRIOR TO USE, TO ENSURE THERE IS SUFFICIENT CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE CHAIN AND ANY STATIC PART OF THE CAR.

IT IS RESPONSIBILITY OF THE END USER TO ENSURE CHAINS ARE FITTED CORRECTLY AND ACCORDING TO THE VEHICLE MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS.
